10 Tips that will take your Home Design Blog to the Next Level

Click here to read my post about the basics. Since I have been blogging for more than a year, I have learned so many things that I want to share with you.

A White Screen vs. Black Screen

Images stand out more on black screens. However, I tend to leave black blogs as soon as possible because the contrast between white text and black background is painful for my eyes.

You can read the comments as well.

Get a header that looks professional for your blog

You, who have been reading this blog from the start, know that I went months without a header. Your header is an important part of your blog’s image if you are serious. First impressions matter!

Make your blog look bigger.

You can choose a wider template. After about six months of blogging, I decided to change mine because I wanted the images to be bigger. Most people these days have larger screens, so your small blog may look even smaller when viewed on one.

Select your images with care.

The [beautiful] pictures I use define my style of decorating, and I receive a lot of positive feedback. That’s why I love clicking on the House of Turquoise Blog: I always know I’m going to be greeted with a beautiful image.

When you write your next blog post, remember that every photo you use reflects your style and taste. Ask yourself if it would look good on a billboard bearing your name.

Please don’t make my mistake. If you’re not blogging yet, start now. I know that I will have to change eventually, but I am currently resisting because I fear the work involved.

Update based upon comments: Blogger is a great tool for hobby bloggers, but if you plan to make money from your blog in the future, WordPress or Typepad are better options.

The way it was explained to me is that using Blogger would be like owning a car with only a steering wheel and nothing else. WordPress offers a lot more widgets and features.

Add your personality to your blog.

Anybody can create a blog about design or colour and start pasting in pretty images, but we are interested to learn more about you [and what you know].

Gary Vaynerchuk explains this in the video below. In a world where everything is transparent and your entire movement is recorded, the good will win, and the bad will lose.

Please choose an area that you know well and are passionate about and speak about it!

You can succeed even if your niche is small. You will quickly lose interest if you do not love your subject!

This is a great article on how to Blog About the same things as Everyone Else and Still Stand Out.

If you’re trying to sell your business and don’t offer any value in return, no one will be reading your blog. Let us know what you have to say, and we’ll be impressed. We’ll see that you’re the expert we need to hire ASAP!

It didn’t even occur to me that I could comment in the six months before I began my blog. And 95% of my comments will come from other bloggers.

Your blog won’t grow as quickly if you don’t build relationships with your readers, respond to their emails, or follow the commenting etiquette (which means posting a reply to a comment you receive). Start commenting, and others will also find you.

Please use paragraphs!

Have you tried reading a page without paragraphs on a computer? It’s difficult. You have to look up and down and scan the page to find where you left off, and I personally lose interest because it is hard to read.

This article from Problogger will tell you if your blog can be scanned!

Even one sentence can be effective in making a point.

Prepare yourself to work hard.

Before I started blogging, I didn’t remember my life. Since November 2008, when I began my blog, I have been obsessed. On average, I spend 2 to 5 hours per day writing posts and answering emails. I also comment on other blogs.

After 10 months, I wrote an average of 4 posts per week. This helped me to reach a high ranking on Google so that my local readers could find my blog. I do online consultations, but I’d say that 90% of my business in the past 6 months has come from this blog.

Hang in there and start your blog. Let us know who you are. Be generous with the information you share. If you have more tips, please add them below.

I’m looking forward to reading your new blog!

A couple of comments from users: Turn off word verification. It is a real pain. If you set your comment moderation to after 2 or 3 days, you can reject spam on your site before it gets posted.

Also, switching to a larger template does not delete any data.
